An in-wall safe is an effective way to upgrade the security of your home. Most home and office safes that are built to be burglar-resistant can provide adequate security against housebreakers, but an in-wall safe increases the security.
This is because in-wall safes can easily be hidden behind wall paintings or under huge rugs or carpets. Burglars will not spend so much time lurking inside their victim's house. In fact, criminology experts at the Chicago Police say burglars spend an average of only six minutes lurking inside their victim's house. That means they don't want to waste their precious time looking behind paintings and underneath the rugs when they can go straight to the master's bedroom for the kill.
Buying an In-Wall Safe
The purpose of your safe should be aligned with the type of safe that you want to buy. As has been already said, there are burglar-resistant safes. But there are also fire-resistant models that are made primarily to protect paper records and media documents from fires for up to certain periods of time. It also goes without saying that an electronic wall safe with a digital combination lock or, better yet, a biometric key lock is a more reliable option than old-fashioned lock-and-key safes.
Choosing a Place for Your Safe
Select the most obscure locations. Pick the lowest cupboard in your kitchen pantry to install the safe, for instance, or perhaps behind a bookshelf in your office. The best place for hiding a safe is somewhere that is part of a bigger closet area. Then again, you also have to be sure that the location you have chosen does not run through any electrical wires or the plumbing. A small wall safe usually needs around six to 10 inches of space inside the wall.
Installing an In-Wall Safe
Once you've picked your location, find two studs where the safe can rest in between. Measure the safe and use a pencil to draw light lines on the wall to indicate where the safe will go. Use a keyhole saw or a saber saw to cut out the hole and a butt chisel to smoothen it out. Build wooden headers from 2 x 4" pieces of wood and attach them to the wall studs.
You will need a helping hand for the next step. Ask your partner to place the safe between the studs and hold it there while you mark the areas where the flanges meet the headers. Remove the safe and drill holes through these marks. Next, put the safe back in and attach it to the studs with lag screws through the holes. Cover the safe's flanges with dry wall and fill all joints with spackling compound. Smooth out the wall once the wall has dried.
